Matthew, Kathryn and Matilda
"We can't thank you enough, it's just exquisite. We couldn't be happier, Kathryn is absolutely delighted. You have such a talent."
When I met Matthew and Kathryn, they were particularly eager to depict their relationship with their daughter Matilda at a stage where she had started to develop her own character yet was still full of childish fascination.
We therefore decided on a family portrait which included all three subjects, and I looked to encapsulate their affection for her by choosing to make her the focal point of their attention, whilst she was absorbed playing with a daisy.
Another element which we decided we wanted within the piece was dynamic movement. I therefore ensured the final composition included both Kathryn and Matilda mid-motion to make it feel less static.
Although the piece was a family portrait, I also experimented with subtly bringing attention to the individuality of each subject by framing each face with directional brush strokes of the same colour. This theme of uniqueness in the context of unity is something I find particularly noticeable in families and makes the dynamic so interesting.
